Leading Sustainable Innovation in the AI-Cybersecurity Nexus

This course explores the strategic intersection of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, where AI simultaneously strengthens cyber defence and introduces new vulnerabilities. Students examine how to govern AI systems responsibly across their full lifecycle from secure-by-design blueprints and MLOps controls to adversarial AI risk and sustainability considerations including ESG impact and energy metrics. The course integrates innovation strategy with governance, equipping students to evaluate AI-cyber opportunities, design accountable operating models, and develop viable business cases for AI-driven security initiatives. Graduates will be prepared to lead responsible digital transformation at the frontier of technology, risk, and organisational strategy.

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply advanced skills to:

S1. Evaluate AI–cybersecurity innovation opportunities and develop defensible strategic recommendations for adoption, investment, or product development.
S2. Design a secure-by-design AI governance blueprint (including MLOps controls, approval gates, model inventories, monitoring strategies, and incident handling protocols).
S3. Analyse adversarial AI risks and propose governance and resilience countermeasures that balance security, performance, and operational feasibility.
S4. Develop a sustainable AI security investment and procurement strategy incorporating lifecycle costs, energy/CO₂ metrics, compliance, and vendor assurance.
S5. Construct a venture design and business model for an AI-cyber initiative (pricing architecture, value proposition, ecosystem strategy, and go-to-market trust framing).
S6. Produce an auditability and conformity assessment plan for AI-enabled systems, ensuring transparency, documentation quality, and accountability.
S7. Develop a risk communication strategy to address societal and stakeholder concerns about AI-enabled cyber threats, misinformation, and manipulation.

By the end of the course, students will be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge and critical understanding of:

K1. The strategic convergence between AI and cybersecurity, including both AI-enabled cyber defence opportunities and AI-generated cyber risks (e.g., adversarial ML, deepfakes, model theft).
K2. AI governance principles and organisational accountability structures suitable for high-impact business contexts, including model lifecycle governance and assurance expectations.
K3. Sustainable innovation principles and how they apply to AI security systems (TCO, energy and carbon footprint, long-term risk, procurement, and compliance).
K4. EU and global regulatory and policy dynamics affecting AI and cybersecurity, including risk-based regulatory logic, data protection rules, and auditability expectations.
K5. The role of trust, transparency, and explainability as market and governance requirements in AI-enabled cybersecurity products and services.
K6. The strategic and societal implications of AI-enabled cyber manipulation, disinformation, and threats to democratic resilience.

By the end of the course, students will be able to demonstrate responsibility and autonomy by:

RA1. Exercising leadership responsibility for sustainable and responsible innovation at the AI–cybersecurity interface, balancing growth, risk, compliance, ethics, and societal impact.
RA2. Leading cross-functional teams (product, security, compliance, operations, procurement, finance, marketing) to implement AI governance and security guardrails in production environments.
RA3. Making independent judgment calls in complex situations involving AI risk, uncertain threat dynamics, and incomplete evidence (e.g., model exploitation, deepfake fraud crises).
RA4. Defending innovation and procurement decisions to executive stakeholders using evidence-based reasoning, sustainability metrics, and compliance alignment.
RA5. Taking accountability for trust and transparency commitments to customers, regulators, and society, including responsible communication, non-misleading assurance, and ethical design choices.
